Ask a Pro: How Much Should I Budget for Custom Cabinets?
Hello everyone! I'm Carl from
Fort Collins Cabinet Kings, and I want to share a story from when I was younger and less experienced in the world of cabinetry. This was my first time getting
custom cabinets, and I learned a lot about budgeting along the way. I hope my experience can help you plan your own project.
When I first decided to get custom cabinets, I was pretty clueless about how much I should set aside. I started by getting some quotes. After talking to several contractors, I settled on a budget of around $5,000. This budget seemed reasonable for my kitchen size. But, as I would soon find out, there were more costs to consider.
The first step was to sit down with a designer to discuss what I wanted. I had a vision of sleek, modern cabinets with plenty of storage. The designer helped me figure out the materials, finishes, and layout. This initial consultation cost me around $200. It was a surprise expense, but it was worth it to get a clear idea of the project.
Choosing materials was the next big step. I opted for solid wood for durability and a timeless look. The cost of materials added up fast. Solid wood cabinets can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. For my kitchen, which required about 20 linear feet of cabinetry, this part alone was around $10,000. This was much higher than I had at first budgeted.
One thing I learned is that custom features can really add to the cost. I wanted pull-out shelves, soft-close drawers, and a lazy Susan in one of the corner cabinets. Each of these features increased the price. The pull-out shelves were about $100 each. Soft-close drawers were an extra $50 per drawer. The lazy Susan was an additional $200. These little extras added another $1,000 to my budget.
The labor cost was another big chunk of the budget. Skilled craftsmen take time to build and install custom cabinets. For my project, the labor cost was about $5,000. This included removing the old cabinets, building the new ones, and
installation. It was more than I expected, but the quality of the work was evident.
During the
installation, we encountered a few unexpected issues. The walls weren't perfectly square, which meant some adjustments had to be made to the cabinets. This added another $500 to the cost. Additionally, I decided to upgrade the hardware to match the new look, which was another $300.
Once installed, the final step was to add the finishing touches to the cabinets. I opted for a high-quality
paint finish, which added another $1,000 to the cost. The total ended up being around $18,000, much higher than my initial budget of $5,000.
Despite the higher cost, I couldn't be happier with the result. The custom cabinets transformed my kitchen, making it more functional and beautiful. The quality and craftsmanship were evident, and I knew these cabinets would last for many years.
From my experience, here are a few tips:
